Ghanaian Artist Addresses Environmental Crisis in Homeland

Serge Attukwei Clottey, American Lottery , 2015, plastic, wire and oil paint, 51 x 94 in.

Serge Attukwei Clottey, American Lottery, 2015, plastic, wire and oil paint, 51 x 94 in.

Applying traditional Ghanaian folk aesthetics to his compositions with the collected gallons, Attukwei "makes paintings without paint." Cutting the gallons into small pieces, the artist shapes the plastic over an open flame--a process similar to the action of bronze sculpting. Binding the multicolored plastic sections together with copper, he combines the ever-present plastic waste with one of the most valuable commodities in the Ghanaian market. His mixed media paintings and sculptural works also incorporate locally sourced textiles, salvaged electronic gadgets and found wood, bones and shells. To learn more..

Sarah Awad, Reclining Women, 2014, oil and vinyl on canvas, 60 x 66 in.

Sarah Awad's masterful, large-scale female nudes deal with formal aspects of space, shape and color that are in dialogue with Color Field Abstraction and Neo-Expressionism of the 80s, while weaving an unusual Fauve-inspired color palette through her figures. Daniel Sewell's spray paintings on paper draw heavily from the theories and conceptual ideas of Analytic Cubism. Using human body part cutout stencils to create his spray paintings, Sewell builds mysterious figurative scenes that harken back to the caves of Lascaux, with refined modern elegance and playful humor. Mija's works evoke classic etching and reveal her formal training and her influences, such as the Symbolists and the Nabis movement, while bringing elements of the body’s natural earthly beauty and the relationship of love in its simplest form.  To learn more >>

Mary Button Durell Opening | Dec 18 | SOME.TIME.SALON by Kimberly Verde

SOME.TIME.SALON | Mary Durell Opening Friday 12/18 , 6 - 9 PM

SOME.TIME.SALON | Mary Durell Opening Friday 12/18, 6 - 9 PM

SOME.TIME.SALON will be showing new works by Mary Durell. In the living room: a round, orb-like sculpture that emanates a soft glow alongside biomorphic squiggles shaped by tracing paper and highlighted with neon orange paint. The orb feeds off natural light to emphasize its translucency, the delicacy of the process, and its complexity; whereas the vivid orange of the wall hangings capture and refract light. In the hall: an installation of paper wall hangings are Mary’s exploration into creating a more practical and approachable body of work in two dimensions. They veer away from the softer, curved lines of Mary’s other work into a linear geometry still focused on form and composition. This installation mimics Mary’s studio where the wall space is covered in bits of paper experimentations, a visual representation of her ideaphoria.
